Journalism Foundation renews support for I-News

If you have been keeping up with I-News, you know that we were born two years ago with the help of the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. EEJF gave I-News its first major grant – and launched a nonprofit news network that has made a measurable difference in Colorado. We are thrilled to announce that EEJF has renewed our $100,000 grant for a third year. A gift to I-News

About a year ago, I-News heard a disturbing anecdote about children in Colorado who were having terrible trouble with their teeth – and that was causing lots of other trouble. We knew there were important stories on this issue that weren’t being told. And we knew the public would want to know. I-News – and YOU – made a difference in 2011

For all of you who have supported I-News with your hearts, minds and pocketbooks, we thought you’d like to know what impact you’ve had. More doctors now disclose drug company payments after I-News helped Colorado Public Radio report hidden funding, allowing patients to make better-informed decisions. Lawmakers changed tax law after I-News helped the Denver Post reveal that movie stars and developers were getting tax breaks meant for farmers and ranchers. Continue Reading →

I-News joins with Piton and Denver foundations in Knight Foundation grant

Project will give public better access to public information

Here at I-News, an important part of our mission is to turn complex data and information into compelling journalism people can use to make decisions in a democracy. We’re thrilled to announce that we are joining with the Piton Foundation and The Denver Foundation in a project that will help us do even more of that. And today, we can announce that the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Community Information Challenge has awarded the project $336,000, a challenge grant that will be matched by the partners involved. You might recall that Knight Foundation awarded I-News a Community Information Challenge grant to fund our startup last year. The new project will unlock data on education, health, and other pressing issues, and put it in the hands of residents seeking to change

their communities and news outlets seeking to inform those communities. Continue Reading →
