Tornado Sighting at DIA Monday Afternoon Leads to Proactive Sheltering

A tornado sighting near Denver International Airport Monday afternoon drew official instruction to those waiting in the passenger pickup area for public transit to return to the main terminal for shelter.

RTD put all SkyRide buses from DIA on hold.

Tornado sightings were also reported in North Denver and near Fort Lupton in Weld County, according to 9News. No damage was immediately reported.

Passenger Ben Zeiger told Rocky Mountain PBS I-News that those waiting on buses and other transit returned in orderly fashion to the the main terminal in response to instructions and alarms.

A tornado was also sighted at DIA last June.

An I-News examination of federal weather data  at the time found that, since 1950, only six other states have experienced more tornadoes than the 1,948 then documented in Colorado.
